Shanghai – Technology will be key for Italian companies trying to conquer the Chinese market, said the president of the Italian Trade Agency, Riccardo Monti. He was speaking from the Shanghai Technology Fair where Italy is guest of honour and AGI a media partner. "China is trying to move towards more sustainable patterns of development and smaller but more intelligent investments. Italy can help China achieve that goal," he told AGI. Chinese authorities and investors appeared to be very interested in the Italian stand. "Italy is lagging behind China in my view. It is time to get going and we should start with smart investments in joint ventures with the Chinese in the high-tech sector," said Mr Monti. China's new five-year development plan indicates to Italian companies the solutions the country wants. Mr Monti said urbanisation and sustainable development were possibly areas where Italian technology could be applied, as well as China's need for a modern healthcare system. "We are here with great determination and in great numbers, because we are certain that the time has come for Italian companies to believe in a new stage of development for China. We should not be frightened by what we are hearing about the difficulties of the Chinese economy: this year China is growing by 6.7 percent, creating great opportunities for Italian companies that know how to seize them."
